Sun and Soil Column Debut

Our First Column appeared in the December 5, 2019 edition of the Fish Wrap!

This is Sun and Soil, a bi-weekly column about the sun, the soil and everything in between! Becca was raised in Sullivan and Jarrod in Findlay. Regenerative Life Farm is located about a mile east of Findlay on 19 acres.

We have expanded the garden to around 10,000 square feet experimenting with different practices to provide nutrient dense produce to our community. Currently we are turning 12 acres of conventionally farmed land into a pasture for chickens, goats and other soil-enhancing animals that will be rotationally grazed.

In 2019, we sold produce at the Sullivan Farmer’s Market and through a CSA. In 2020, we will build on that success with other farmer’s markets, a larger CSA and an online produce and egg store.

This column is going to explore how we can interact with nature as a complex rather than merely complicated system. A complicated system is man-made, non-living and relies on a set group of rules and parameters. Complex systems are living things like people, plants and soil. Every action in a complex system is either regenerative (increasing life) or degenerative (decreasing life) and won’t have a guaranteed outcome due to the numerous variables and unknowns.

Sun & Soil will not only be about farmer’s markets and backyard gardening, but also how we treat the lawns we mow, the miles of ditches we drive by and the endless fields that feed the world.

All life starts with the sun. Future columns will be about how plants and soil work together to capture the energy of the sun. And the difference between living, nurturing soil and dirt. We’ll talk about the cleanup crew (bugs) and how whole foods support life (your life!). We’re also going to talk about regenerative farming practices and why we do what we do!
