The Power of Food

This appeared in the July 29, 2021 edition of The Fish Wrap.

Our society is increasingly relying on the government and big pharma to maintain our health. Vaccines are seen as the only defense against the pandemic, a growing majority of people take daily prescriptions to maintain emotional stability and the growing number of people with diabetes or heart disease rely on daily prescriptions just to stay alive.

Whole foods contain the nutrients needed for energy, immunity, growth and repair, and even emotional stability. Processing food strips it of these crucial nutrients. A super-sized fast food meal can leave you hungry after a few hours, feeling sleepy and cranky with cravings for more junk food. When you eat processed food, it takes a lot of calories to make you feel satiated because the body is not getting the nutrients it needs for basic processes. We are starving in the midst of plenty - malnourished while fighting an obesity epidemic.

The big 3 serious health conditions of our time - cancer, heart disease and diabetes have been steadily increasing along with the amount of processed food in our diet. All three can be prevented or mitigated by changing our diet to whole foods. If your only defense against serious illness is a daily pill, you will do anything to get that pill. Making some incremental changes to your diet can start to give you back some of your power and freedom.

Nutrient dense, whole foods contain building blocks for growth, repair, immunity, mental health and well being. Here’s a simple guide to tell a whole food from a processed food:

  1. Whole food probably doesn’t come in a box

  2. Whole food has 5 or fewer ingredients and sugar isn’t in the first 3

  3. Whole food ingredients are words you recognize and all of them are food!

Take a bite of freedom today!
